The majestic Baroque cathedral in the monastery courtyard of the UNESCO World Heritage Site serves as the backdrop for an opera play during the St. Gallen Festival—this location's history and engagement with art offer a rich cultural context. The opera is a sumptuous and engrossing historical musical drama that blends poetry and realism, drawing inspiration from the life of poet André Chénier.
The French Revolution and the Jacobins' reign of terror serve as the setting for the play's imaginary love triangle between Chénier, the aristocracy, Maddalena, and revolutionary Gérard. Giordano creates a vast historical epic through a musical collage of historical dances, French Revolutionary music, and intensely passionate lyrical arias. Modestas Pitrenas leads the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra, and Rodula Gaitanou, a Greek director, makes her debut in Switzerland.
