The "Ubersitz" is an ancient Celtic tradition that dates back to pre-Christian times, where the residents of the valleys used "Trycheln" to keep evil spirits away from their villages during the longest nights of the year. This tradition is still passed down from generation to generation and is celebrated during the last week of the old year, starting on the night of December 25th and ending with the last workday of the year. Throughout the week, different Trychel groups parade through the villages of the Haslital, increasing in size and noise until the climax on the night of the "Ubersitz." On this evening, all Trychler from the surrounding villages gather in Meiringen village centre for a collective Trychel parade.
