Onions and garlic are the major attractions during the annual Zibelemärit festival held by the City of Bern. This traditional folk event, which takes place on the fourth Monday of November each year, features about 50 tons of garlic and onions that local farmers have brought in.
In addition to enjoying delectable mulled wine, visitors may anticipate seeing vibrant market stalls and braids of onions and garlic. Although many locals begin wandering the streets earlier to peruse the items and haggle with merchants, the festival officially opens at 6 a.m. Various onion foods, including onion pizza, sausage with onions, onion soup, and onion tarts, are available to foodies. In winter, guests can also stay warm with a cup of mulled wine.
The event is free of charge.
